みなさん、週末は何をしましたか？私は週末に、鉄道博物館へ行きました。
鉄道 = railway, 博物館 = museum
ここでは、昔の日本の電車や新幹線を見ることができます。結構おもしろかったですよ。

今日のトピックは新幹線です！
みなさん、もちろん「新幹線」を知っていますよね？
新幹線は、日本で一番早い電車です。いや、世界で一番早いのかな？
新幹線の最高時速は何キロでしょうか？最高 = maximum, 時速 = distance per hour,
最高時速 = maximum speed per hour 何キロ？何マイル？だと思いますか。
正解は、最高時速は320キロ（マイルでは200マイルですね）
What is the maximum speed of the Shinkansen?
ちなみに東京〜新横浜の間では、もっと遅く走っています。建物が多いし、危ないですからね。
おそく：late, slow / 走る = to run , 建物 = building , 危ない = dangerous
では、新幹線はいつ作られましたか？ 作られる = to be made
いつ作られたと思いますか？
ヒントは、東京オリンピックです。最後の東京オリンピックはいつでしたか？
そうですね。1964年です。東京オリンピックと一緒に、新幹線は走り始めました。
新幹線はどうしてこんなに早いんでしょうか？
私はエンジニアだからよくわかりませんが、新幹線の鉄道には踏切がありません。
鉄道 = railway 踏切 = railway crossing
踏切も信号もないので、途中で止まることがないんですね。
それから、新幹線は今まで一度も事故を起こしたことがありません。これはびっくりですね。
今まで：until now, 一度も：never, 事故：accident, 事故を起こす：to have an accident, to cause an accident
The shinkansen has never had an accident.
日本では地震や津波があるのに、事故が全然ないのはすごいですよね。
地震 = earthquake, 事故 = accident
新幹線には「地震検知システム」というのがあるらしいです。検知 = detection
だから、地震があったら、日本の全部の新幹線は自動的に止まります。自動的に = automatically
今、日本は新しい新幹線の鉄道を２つ作っています。１つは九州の新幹線です。九州の博多から鹿児島までの新幹線を作っていて、これは来年2022年に完成する予定です。
Shinkansen from Hakata to Kagoshima in Kyushu will be completed next year in 2022.
それから、もう１つは「リニア新幹線」です。東京から大阪まで走る、新しい新幹線です。
これね、私はエンジニアじゃないので、よくわからないんですが・・・
とにかく、めっちゃ早い新幹線です。今の最高速度（maximum speed）は320km ですけど、新しい「リニア新幹線」は500km, 310マイルらしいです！
めっちゃ早いですね。東京から大阪まで、１時間でいけるんです。
NYからワシントンDCまで１時間です。
この新幹線は、普通の電車とは違います。磁石で走るらしいです。磁石 = magnet

Today’s topic is the Shinkansen! You all know the “Shinkansen”, of course, right? The Shinkansen is the fastest train in Japan. No, is it the fastest in the world? What is the maximum speed of the Shinkansen? Maximum = maximum, speed = distance per hour, Maximum speed per hour How many kilometers? How many miles? Do you think The correct answer is that the maximum speed is 320 km / h (200 mph)
By the way, it runs slower between Tokyo and Shin-Yokohama. There are many buildings and it’s dangerous. Slow: late, slow / run = to run, building = building, dangerous = dangerous
So when was the Shinkansen built? Made = to be made When do you think it was made? The hint is the Tokyo Olympics. When was the last Tokyo Olympics? I agree. It is 1964. With the Tokyo Olympics, the Shinkansen started running.
Why is the Shinkansen so fast? I’m an engineer, so I’m not sure, but there are no railroad crossings on the Shinkansen. Railroad = railroad crossing = railroad crossing There are no railroad crossings or traffic lights, so you won’t stop in the middle.

The current maximum speed is 320km, but the new “Linear Shinkansen” seems to be 500km, 310 miles! It’s really fast. You can get from Tokyo to Osaka in an hour. It takes 1 hour from NY to Washington DC. This Shinkansen is different from ordinary trains. It seems to run with a magnet. Magnet = magnet
