2021年3月15日（月）今日の天気は晴れ。朝の気温は５度でしたが、お昼は１９度まで上がります。週末はドライブをして、久しぶりに海をみに行きました。私が住んでいたチェコには海がなかったので、海を見たのは本当に久しぶりでしたね。2年、3年ぶりかな？とても嬉しかったです。

今日のテーマは、ホワイトデーです。
みなさん、聞いたことがありますか？ホワイトデー。
ホワイトデーは、毎年3月14日にあるイベントです。これは、バレンタインデーにチョコレートをもらった人が、ホワイトデーにプレゼントをお返しする、というイベントです。
日本では、2月14日のバレンタインの日に女の子が男の子にチョコレートなどのプレゼントをあげるのが一般的です。あげる：to give, 一般的：common, general
そして3月14日のホワイトデーに、男の子が女の子にお返しとしてプレゼントをあげます。
お返し：return, a return gift
We have similar terms “to return”, 返す and お返しする。
返す is to return something that you borrowed from someone.
お返しする is to return a gift to show your gratitude.
3月14日のホワイトデーは、男の子が女の子にお返しをする日です。

この「ホワイトデー」は、日本で始まった新しい文化です。50年くらい前に始まりました。クリスマスにKFCのチキンを食べるのと同じように、ホワイトデーも会社が始めたビジネスの一つです。
もともと、このイベントの名前は「ホワイトデー」じゃなくて、「リターン・バレンタイン」という名前だったみたいです。でも、日本のお菓子の会社が「チョコのお返しにマシュマロをあげましょう」と言い始めてから、このイベントの名前が「ホワイトデー」になったそうです。
今は、マシュマロだけじゃなくて、色々なプレゼントがあります。クッキーとか、ビスケットとか、タオルとかコスメなど、女の子が喜ぶものなら何でも良いんですね。

このイベントには、暗黙の了解があります。暗黙：tacit 了解：agreement, understanding です
暗黙の了解は、tacit understanding. This is a term for unstated understanding without expressing verbally.
もし、男の子がその女の子のことが好きだった場合、（好きだったら）ホワイトデーに大きいお返しをします。だいたい、女の子がくれたチョコレートの二倍から三倍くらいの値段のプレゼントをあげるんです。If a man liked the girl, the man gives the girl a gift that costs two or three times as much as the chocolate that the girl gave to the man. アクセサリーとか、高級な（fancy, luxury）チョコレートとか。
でも、もし男の子がその女の子のことを、友達としてしか見ていない場合、ホワイトデーには小さいお返しをあげるだけです。小さいお返しとは、たとえばキャンディーとか、マシュマロとか。500円くらいの何か小さいものです。
女の子はどんなお返しをもらえるのか分からないから、ちょっとドキドキしますね。

実は、日本には昔から、何かプレゼントをもらったらお返しをする、という文化があります。
これはホワイトデーだけの話じゃないんです。
例えば、友達におみやげをもらったら、次の旅行でその友達におみやげを買ってあげたり、あとは誕生日にプレゼントをもらったら、その友達の誕生日にプレゼントをあげたりします。
何かをもらったら、何かをお返しする、という文化です。
結婚式に参加する時も、かならずお金やプレゼントをあげますが、結婚したカップルもかならずお返しのプレゼントを用意しています。
だから日本でも、ホワイトデーの文化が人気なんですね。
日本人はみんな、お返しをするのが好きなんです。

Today’s theme is White Day. Have you heard of it? White Day. White Day is an event on March 14th every year. This is an event in which a person who receives chocolate on Valentine’s Day returns a gift on White Day.
In Japan, it is common for girls to give boys chocolates and other gifts on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Give: to give, general: common, general And on March 14th, White Day, the boy will give the girl a present in return. Return: return, a return gift
