今日は「新年の挨拶」について話します。
新年：new year, 挨拶：greeting
日本の新年の挨拶が何か知っていますか？
そうですね。「明けましておめでとうございます」です。
でも「明けましておめでとう」・・・・ってどういう意味でしょう？
おめでとうございますは、簡単ですよね。誕生日おめでとう！って言いますしね。
じゃあ「明けまして」は何？
日本では、古い年が終わって、新しい年が始まる！というのを「明ける」と言います。

「明ける」は、ドアを「開ける」と同じじゃないですよ！
「明ける」の漢字には「明るい」という漢字を使います。
年が明ける・・・・。＝ 古い年が終わって、新しい年になる。
「夜が明ける」という言い方もあります。これは「夜が終わって、明るい朝が始まる！」という意味です。
じゃあ、「梅雨が明ける」というのはどういう意味だと思いますか？
梅雨：rainy season
これは「梅雨が終わって、良い季節が始まる！」という意味です。
季節：season
つまり「明ける」という言葉は、何かが終わって何か良いことが始まる、という意味なんですね。

ちなみに、前の年に家族や親しい人が亡くなった場合、「明けましておめでとう」と言うのはあまり良くないんです。
親しい人：close friends, closed people
亡くなる：to pass away
