How did you spend Christmas and New Year’s?Did you have a nice time?

日本は毎日とてもいい天気だったので、私は家族とよく公園に遊びに行きましたよ。

おいしいものもたくさん食べて、とてもいいクリスマスとお正月でした！

In Japan, the weather was really nice every day, so I often went to the park with my family.We also ate lots of delicious food, so it was a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

今日のトピックは、「赤ちゃんの名前」です！

日本ではどうやって赤ちゃんに名前を付けるか、知っていますか？

みなさんの国ではどうですかね？

Today’s topic is “Baby Names.”

Do you know how people choose baby names in Japan?How about in your country?

外国では、名前リストから選ぶという国もありますよね。

あと、お父さんと同じ名前を付ける、という国もありますね。

In some countries, parents choose a name from a name list.In others, children are given the same name as their father.

でも日本では、自分で好きな名前を自由に考えることが多いです。

But in Japan, parents often create a name freely by themselves, choosing a name they like.

最近人気な名前は、女の子は「ひまり」「りん」「めい」らしいですよ。

男の子の人気な名前は「あお」「みなと」「はると」らしいです。

Recently, popular girls’ names include Himari, Rin, and Mei.Popular boys’ names are Ao, Minato, and Haruto.

で、好きな名前が見つかったら、漢字を選びます。

漢字にはそれぞれ意味があるから、おもしろいですよ。

After choosing a name, parents then choose the kanji.Each kanji has its own meaning, which makes it really interesting.

たとえば、私の名前は「ももこ」です。

漢字は、桃の花（peach blossom）の桃（peach）と、子どもの「子」(child)です。

私は3月に産まれたんですが、3月は桃の花が咲くから、「桃子」になりました。笑

かわいいでしょ。

For example, my name is Momoko.It is written with the kanji for peach and child.I was born in March, and peach blossoms bloom in March, so my name became Momoko.

私の娘の名前は秘密ですが、名前に「良い」という漢字を入れました。

「良い」人生になってほしい、「良い」人になってほしい、という願いを込めてつけました。

My daughter’s name is a secret, but it includes the kanji meaning “good.”I chose it with the hope that she will have a “good” life and become a “good” person.

日本人の名前には、それぞれ親が考えた「意味」がありますから、日本人の友達がいたら、名前の意味を聞いてみてくださいね。

Japanese names usually have a special meaning chosen by the parents,so if you have Japanese friends, try asking them about the meaning of their names.
