今からちょうど10年前、2011年3月11日、午後2時46分、東北地方で強い地震がありました。
東北地方 = northeast region of Japan 地震：earthquake
マグニチュードは9.0、今までで一番大きい地震でした。
地震は岩手県、宮城県、福島県、茨城県までの、５００Km以上 の地域で起こりました。
地震が起こる / 起きる : the earthquake occur
この地震はとても大きくて怖いものでしたが、この地震の後でもっと怖いことが起こりました。
それは、津波と、原子力発電所のメルトダウンです。
原子力 : nuclear energy , 発電所：a power station 、原子力発電所のメルトダウンです。
実は、地震で亡くなった人（亡くなる：to die, people who died due to the earthquake）は、600人くらいでしたが、津波で亡くなった人は15000人もいました。亡くなったかどうかも分からない、どこにいるか分からない人（行方不明者）は、2,500人です。

津波の高さは、１０m以上あって、一番大きい津波は４０mでした。The maximum height of the tsunami was 40m.

そしてこの大きい津波のせいで、福島にあった原子力発電所（nuclear power plant, especially the nuclear reactor）がメルトダウンしてしまいました。
メルトダウンしてから、もう福島の一部のエリアに、人は住むことができません。
強い放射能があるからです。放射能は、radiation
放射能を浴びすぎると、病気になりますね。
この2011年3月11日は、地震、津波、メルトダウンが起こって、たくさんの人が亡くなった日です。10年が経った今でも、忘れることはできません。

今、２０２１年3月でも、まだ自分の家がなくて避難所（shelter）に住んでいる人が、4万人以上います。
